Drivers' Corner - Ask the Recruiter

It never ceases to amaze me--the quality of questions posed by the readers of this column is outstanding. Thank you again for the questions that were sent to me since the last column. Please continue sending questions in and I will do my best to answer as many as I can. If I don't answer your question in the column there is a good probability that a similar one has already been answered in a previous column, so I encourage reviewing the archives when possible (this is especially true for questions regarding felonies, DAC, and DUIs). Thank you for making this column the great success that it continues to be.

For this month, I have decided to re-address a few topics that keep popping up.

Q Can you find a job with a felony conviction?


To put it quite simply: yes, you can. It may take some effort to contact a number of carriers, but there are many out there that will hire a driver with a felony conviction in their background. The criteria vary by carrier, but most will want the felony to be several years old, of a non-violent nature, and not drug or alcohol related. I do not have a "list" of carriers that will hire those with felonies in their background, but I have spoken with many simply by calling at random.

Q Will a DUI or hot drug test end my career forever?


Forever is a very strong word, but there is little doubt that most carriers will not hire you based on this. A DUI can be overcome with time, though this varies by carrier. Failed drug tests will almost certainly remain an offense that makes you un-hirable, if it is reported and on your record.

Q I am a female who wishes to become a driver. I understand I will need to go through OTR training, however, most trainers in the industry are male. What is common practice for male/female driver training? A hotel is ideal but at whose expense? Should a hotel not be you cannot always count on one on the road, then what is legal practice? I'm concerned with safety of course, but also either party throwing false accusations. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.


This is a very good question, and very valid concerns. The vast majority of the carriers that I am familiar with, and that offer OTR training, have female trainers available for this very situation. This, of course, is the ideal situation. I recommend contacting as many carriers as possible to find a way to arrange this.

The other alternative is to be trained by a male trainer. This, to me, seems like the least desirable of the options because you simply cannot count on a hotel. If a hotel exists, then it would likely be at your cost because it would be your choice not to stay in the sleeper. If no hotels are available, then I am honestly not aware what the legal practices are, or if there are even legal practices that apply. The cab of a truck is so small it is simply impossible to offer separate quarters.

Again though, the carriers I am familiar with will offer a female trainer on request. I recommend calling and calling until you find one that will accommodate you.

Q Last year I tried for two driving jobs that I got turned down for. I checked my motor vehicle record (MVR) and found three tickets on it that weren't mine. How do I go about getting them off my record?


This is a very unfortunate situation indeed. If you do have an MVR with violations that are not yours, legal action will be necessary to clear up the record. You will most certainly need a lawyer. You will likely be required to provide documentation supporting the fact that you were not where these violations indicated you were.

It may be possible to determine where these violations were issued from and contact those jurisdictions and ask them to investigate whether or not they are indeed yours. Law enforcement generally maintains copies of violations so, if it is a simple clerical error, it may be easily overcome. However, my guess is you will need to take further action. Get the help of a lawyer for this one.
