BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Driving two million miles is equivalent to more than 80 trips around the Earth’s equator, and two truck drivers with the same company reached this milestone accident-free just in time for National Truck Drivers Appreciation Week (Sept. 19-24).
Boyd Bros. Transportation, which is headquartered in Clayton, Ala., recognizes two drivers this week whose two million consecutive safe miles logged reflect the industry’s commitment to safely delivering goods on time across the country.
Dennis Howard of Goodwater, Ala., and Virgil Shell of Columbia, S.C., drivers with Boyd Bros. since 1988 and 1993 respectively, will be joined by their families at a ceremony this week where they will receive a trophy, cash reward and other gifts from Boyd Bros., according to CEO Gail Cooper.
“Drivers like Dennis and Virgil are a big reason why the trucking industry represents nine percent of the gross domestic product,” Cooper said. “Their commitment to going about their job with the highest priority on safety allows us to provide a needed service while making the roads increasingly safe.”
The number of truck-involved traffic fatalities declined 20 percent last year, according to figures released Sept. 9 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The reduction puts fatalities at the lowest level in recorded Department of Transportation history.
Drivers like Howard take pride in logging safe miles and appreciate the support they receive.
“Everything at Boyd Bros. is about safety.” Howard said. “Training requirements are tough, and we get daily alerts and reminders so we are always thinking about things that can happen and remembering to keep safety first. That is one of the reasons Boyd. got that award.”
In 2010, Boyd Bros. was named Best Fleet to Drive For by the Truckload Carriers Association.
“Every driver wants the roads to be safe, and Boyd gives us the tools we need to make them safe.”
